My last journal entry talked about the things I look for in an in-home session. Today, I wanted to share the factors and the reasons behind my work looking the way they look – Bright and Airy! There are many factors but I rounded them up to the top 3.
Here are the top 3 factors that we can work on together to get the results you see from my portfolio:
Location – Family Photographer Hamilton
Although the expectation from professional photographers is that they can make any location work (and we do!), the overall result is still dependent on a number of factors. And one of them is location. Location has a lot to do with the overall look of the final images. I have my favourite locations in my local area where I know the light and the spots will work with a light and airy look for outdoor. As for indoor, I either work in home or at two of my favourite natural light studios – The Nook and Studio Verde.
The more open a location is, the more the light can penetrate through. Open field is a top favourite! We are fortunate enough that there are plenty of parks accessible to us. Location is something that we are going to discuss together during the planning stage as part of the experience in working together with me. If there is a location that holds a special meaning to you, we look at that first and I scout it for the best spots to get your portraits done.
Clothing – Family Photographer Hamilton
What makes a light and airy photo is not only the location but a factor that we can mostly control – CLOTHES! I am a lover of neutrals because not only do they photograph timeless but they also act as a natural reflector. Also clothing definitely changes the whole vibe of an image. Even if we pick a location that’s open and where the light comes through nicely, if the outfits are darker shades, that would likely not have the same results if we chose light/pastel/neutral clothing.
But good news! Because I am a full service photographer, you do not have to worry about this part because I provide wardrobes for mama and kids, and style guides with shoppable links for dads. This ensures that one part of the equation is already taken care of and bonus points, you don’t have to worry about going back and forth and shopping to see which one will work out best!
Play – Family Photographer Hamilton
When I was working on my brand, there was an exercise that asked us to describe our work in 3 words. I came up with : Happy, Sentimental, Joyful. This is what I want to be reflected on in my work. I’d say this is true in my personal life as well. When we take photos together, I’d likely not ask you to look at the camera. Most of the time, if not always, I want you to look at your family members. I give prompts that would naturally make you move. A lot of walking, throwing in the air, hugging, running, jumping and even singing, to name a few.
We strive for at least one photo where everyone is looking at the camera but more than that, I want you to feel good during the session. I want everyone to be comfortable (even dads!). And most of all, I want you to have fun. When kids have fun and the parents join them, I find that those are the most beautiful photos captured during a session.
