Having had two pregnancies so far, I can say that each of them are different. The challenges, both physical and mental for each of the pregnancies was also unique. And this makes sense because the babies inside my womb are also unique. I also noticed that more often than not, maternity photos are something that’s overlooked or skipped by mamas. I skipped my first one so decided to have two maternity photos during my second pregnancy to make up for it. HA!
I think the most common reason I hear why this season is not documented by some is because they do not feel their best whilst pregnant. I felt that way with my second and fortunately it didn’t stop me because I learned from my mistake of not documenting it with my first. Whether you decide to document this season or not, what I wanted to share are things you wanted to ask yourself and consider for those maternity photos.
Maternity Photography Hamilton : This is true not only for maternity photos but for any type of photo session. Although most likely photographers have location preferences in mind, you have to ask yourself what it is that you want. Since winter in Ontario is harsh, I personally shy away from taking outdoor photos during this season. So during the winter season, I highly recommend at home or in studio sessions.
However, in the spring, summer and fall months, outdoor locations for portraits are gorgeous. There are many parks, farms, and fields that are available for us to use. Do you like the beach? Architecture? Is there a location that holds special meaning for you? These are things you can consider and ask yourself. We provide studio access for full maternity sessions. And we also offer sessions outdoors (weather permitting) and at home sessions.
Maternity Photography Hamilton : There is no right or wrong answer here. It depends on your comfort level! I find that in my second pregnancy, I had more aches and pains in my body early on. But I am thankful for all the chiropractic and massage help during that time. And also because it was my second pregnancy, I think I have popped earlier compared with my first. They say it’s because your body already knows. Here are 3 different sessions at different timeline of Mama’s pregnancies. They are all beautiful.
But anyway going back to the topic, 32-36 weeks is a good window. You can have a rounder belly during that time but you are still comfortable enough to move and enjoy photo day (but again this is only a guide, you know your body the best!). We require at least a month’s notice when booking your maternity session with us as we need at least a month to plan a stress free and custom session for you.
Maternity Photography Hamilton : Let us talk about this delicate and special time. Pregnancy can be a long and all consuming journey but it is also very beautiful at the same time. I truly believe that this season should be celebrated in whatever form or way that is authentic to you. Whether the session only includes you and your growing belly, with a partner, or with your older kid/s (if you have one) is totally up to you.
I think what’s special with the solo session with only mama and baby is that it can be a special and quiet moment with just them. While the session with a partner/kids, showcases the family before the coming of the new addition. Both are special moments to document and commemorate! We offer both kinds and champion what you are most comfortable in.
Maternity Photography Hamilton : We all have our personal preferences and style. Some prefer more bold and colours, while others prefer more light and neutrals. I think when you are considering this, it is important to find a photographer that is in line with your style. You would not want to hire someone whose style is different from yours then ask them to change their editing style to get what you have in mind. Some photographers also provide wardrobes. In this case, you have to check and ask what type of dresses, gowns, or props they provide. Is this something you would comfortably wear? Is this something that you will feel authentic in?
We provide dresses and clothings for mamas and kids. The clothing we provide are elevated dresses and clothes. These are well curated to match the style you see in our portfolio from the website or instagram. Styling and wardrobe has a lot to do with the final images. If you like bright and airy, where your love and connection is the front and centre of photos, and not props to distract or take away from the images, then I cannot wait to hear from you. Let’s chat!
