In-home sessions are special. They are my go to especially for the winter months and newborn sessions. They are cozy, intimate, personal and authentic to you. But some clients have reservations about doing in-home sessions because they think their home is not ideal to photograph. Worries range from too much clutter to their homes not being photogenic enough.
I wanted to breakdown what I look for in-home sessions. They are very simple things!
I am a natural light photographer so finding light is important for me. Sometimes it is not obvious how professional photographers work the light. But we will know once we see the potential room/area where we would have the session. In most cases, it will be where a big window is because that’s where light from outside is coming from.
Aside from finding the big window, there are other factors that come into play here like time of day. Maybe the house is east facing or west facing. So then time of day matters because the light in the morning might be better in the afternoon. I work with you to know all these things when we do our planning session.
Another factor is if it’s gloomy or overcast that day, we will need to reschedule. The session below was rescheduled to the following day because it was raining the day we were supposed to do the session which will greatly affect the final images. Good thing we did because this session remains to be one of my faves to this day :
Most of the time, if not always, we will be having the session in the bedroom. Honestly this might be the closest thing to reality because in the first few days in the newborn stage, we are mostly in bed. Resting, recovering, snuggling, feeding, etc. If you are not, what are you doing! Anyway, what I ask is, if available, kindly prepare some solid sheets for the bed and pillows. If you like my bright and airy style, you will see that white and cream are preferred colors.
If this is not available to you at all, and I have clients who do not have these (like who has white and cream anymore when they have kids? ME), do not fret! I come and bring all these so we can put that over what you currently have. So no sweat there. This is a preference that I only ask but if not accessible, it is not a deal breaker.
Hey! Sometimes what you only really need is a nice big neutral wall. This is true whether we shoot in home or in the studio. I’d like taking portraits against those simple blank walls for those simplistic shots where you and your family are the focus. You would not believe how many varieties of shots we can do against a nice empty blank simple wall.
Simple right? Also, we plan for these things together during the planning process. But these are the top 3 things I look for when doing in home sessions, whether newborn or family sessions. Rest assured, your home is beautiful and if this is your preferred location, we will find those pockets where we can have those portraits taken for you.
