Every birth story is different in its own beautiful way. No matter how your baby arrives in this world, your story is totally unique to you, from the moment you find out you’re pregnant to the moment you hold your little one in your arms for the first time. While childbirth may not always be predictable, you can do your best to plan for an experience that is empowering, positive, and transformational. For some women, that plan begins with the decision to use a midwife – and luckily, we have some amazing Burlington midwives right here in our community!
In Ontario, Registered Midwives (RMs) are healthcare providers who have completed a 4-year bachelor of health sciences in midwifery degree. They are able to provide continuous care throughout pregnancy, labor, and delivery, and the first 6 postpartum weeks following your birth. Midwives work from a philosophy that you, as a birthing person, should have the freedom to make your own choices about giving birth and be actively involved in your care. They’ll make sure you have all of the evidence-based information you need to confidently make educated decisions. When you use a midwife, you don’t need an OB/GYN; your midwife will provide all prenatal care, medical supervision throughout labor and delivery, and postpartum care.
When you use a midwife for your birth experience, you’ll also have the flexibility to choose between giving birth at home or in a hospital (RNs are qualified to deliver in both environments.) Using a midwife doesn’t mean you have to have a natural, unmedicated birth, either; whatever you decide to do for your birth story is up to you!
Midwives are wonderful options for those with low-risk pregnancies; high-risk pregnancies are still best supervised by specialists and physicians. That being said, should anything unexpected arise throughout your pregnancy or delivery, your midwife will be able to refer you to the right person to get you and your baby the additional care you need.
If you’re considering using a midwife for your pregnancy and birth, take a look at some of these amazing Burlington Midwives!
4332 New St, Burlington, ON L7L 1T5, Canada
Burlington and Area Midwives (BAM) built a team of midwives dedicated to offering maternity care close to home for their Burlington community. Founded in 2006, BAM was originally a sister practice of the Community Midwives of Halton. Today, they still operate by the same principles upon which they were created, including connectedness, presence, expertise, and impact. Building relationships and being intentionally engaged are at the heart of everything they do.
When you choose a midwife from Burlington and Area Midwives, you’ll be able to choose between home birth and delivering at Joseph Brant Hospital. At home, you’ll have the freedom to get up and move, eat, and drink as you see fit, all while in the comfort of your own home. In a hospital, your midwife will work collaboratively with obstetricians, nurses, pediatricians, lactation consultants, and others while still working as an independent practitioner. You are also able to access pain medications like epidurals while delivering in a hospital. Whichever you choose, your BAM midwife will be there for you!
BAM’s midwives work in small teams, ensuring that there is always someone familiar to you in attendance for your prenatal care, birth, and postpartum check-ups. Two midwives attend each delivery, one to primarily focus on the laboring person and the other to focus on the baby. You’ll feel even more at ease knowing you have a relationship with each person in attendance at your birth.
